Crave the reorientation of “The Work.” The moments that have made you.
My whole college career played consecutively would have lasted a little over two months. 70 + games for UNC… yet lacrosse represents years of incredible memories and lessons in my life.
Training and preparing, that is really the journey, that is where the value is mined.
I witnessed all my skill development pay off in competition, as well as personal inadequacies lead to mistakes, but the forthcoming training is where I saw the gold. My capacity to look bravely at failure, strengthen a discouraged spirit that would eventually be indomitable, and finally, my ability to become familiar with something that once felt foreign.
You take memories with you… but the lessons lead you, they change you.
Over seventy games was an education, but without a reverence and awareness for the value of training I would not have been half the player I was.
My encouragement for players heading into this Spring season:
Crave the reorientation of “THE WORK.” The moments that have made you.
When the game was not going my way, or I was disappointed in the most recent performance at practice, I went back to the wall, found a bag of balls and the field again… and found myself. It would always remind me of why I played!
It was the journey. I just loved the process.
The intricate puzzle of skill work, the perfect symphony of power and coordination when dodging and shooting… overcoming doubt and discouragement to find a new wave of momentum.
Harrison and I hope our lacrosse community this spring can play a small part in this. Clarifying the lessons… the purpose - maybe being a source of peace, a weekly reminder of the journey you are on and the potential that is dormant unless discovered.
The games will continue to be an awesome celebration of the work you have done… or an indictment on the work that has been avoided. Regardless, through it all, you are still on the journey. Keep going ! The work can't stop.
Persevere,
Henry Schertzinger
